Electoral Reform Dangers
ELECTORAL REFORM HAS BIG DANGERS
Only a tiny number of Canadians likely understand how the Liberal’s electoral reform will affect our country and our CANADIAN CULTURE, never mind our INSTITUTION OF CANADIAN DEMOCRACY.
Our present system (FPTP- First Past The Post), doesn’t perfectly match the number of seats in parliament with the popular vote percentage distribution. Thus, views of small minorities may not be automatically represented and ISSUE BASED parties like the GREEN PARTY may not obtain equal representation according to the popular vote. Our RIDINGS voting system still allows smaller parties and minorities to run candidates, so their democracy is not threatened.
In fact it is Canada’s definition of DEMOCRACY that will be changed and only a few Canadians actually understand what our defining parameters are. According to their government, Russia is a Communist Democracy. Many governments claim they are DEMOCRACIES, but there are a lot of flavours Canadians would never want to taste.
The Liberals are already committed to the MMP- Mixed Member Proportional system and the chances of a REFERENDUM are nil at present. (Something as important as this issue, should be mandatory REFERENDUM policy and legal changes.)
MMP certainly tries to improve the balance of seats to more closely match the distribution of individual votes. By voting twice, once for a candidate and once for a party, Elections Canada, can allocate seats more closely to the popular vote.
What Canadians are missing is that this certainly strengthens the possibility of election of more radicalized members of parliament. Many European Governments are being de-stabilized by radical elements and in some countries, minorities are so influential that alliances are the only way anything can be done. Good legislation is almost impossible to achieve and the countries are forced to adopt “special interest” policies that rarely move their countries forward.
The effect of MMP is to impose on our “Nation of Nations”, which consists of over 1000 cultures, an adversarial political arena of culture against culture, what I call a DIVERSIFIED CULTURES PRIORITY. Each culture is empowered to push its agenda to force the rest of the cultures to adopt and exist under their domain.
The alternative to this, I call a CANADA CULTURE PRIORITY. This imperative is the one we have had for 150 years, where people from many cultures stand side by side, respect their differences and serve one another by placing the needs of our country ahead of the desires of our cultures. The present electoral system with its modest weaknesses is much more effective in allowing this principle to survive than the MMP system.
I am terribly concerned that the Liberal Party academics have not done enough analyses to see how divisive our country will become if we place individual cultures ahead of our somewhat hidden CANADIAN CULTURE.
The CFP has written much about our CANADIAN CULTURE, a culture of cultures, but it is a shame that our citizens don’t know what this constitutes. (This website includes a CONSTUTIONAL AMENDMENT that lays down some of these traits that every citizen, regardless of culture, values most highly in their personal, family and community lifestyles.)
I encourage you to take a moral responsibility to protect our CANADIAN DEMOCRACY by forwarding this link to your friends and the media and the politicians.
God Bless Canada.
